Name Calling
By: Alex Minki Kim
The propaganda technique, name calling is well used on this poster as it constructs a negative opinion toward the Central Powers of Germany and Austria Hungary. This poster is reflecting on Germany for their brutal actions in the Rape of Belgium. The poster consists an image of a gorilla holding an innocent woman on his left hand and a bloody club on his right hand written as “Kultur” which suggests that the Germans are uncivilized. The poster adds words like “destroy” along with the image to use emotional appeal in the poster in order for the audience to enlist in the U.S. army to destroy the German, or the gorilla who is capturing an feminine woman. Most importantly, the poster calls the Germans or the gorilla a “mad brute.” By using name calling in the poster, it creates an effect where the strong words arouse a negative feeling toward the enemy to persuade the audience members to enlist in the U.S. army. Not only that, by using name calling in this poster, it gives a stereotypical idea where the Central Powers are the evil and brutal ones, which is a biased viewpoint. We can conclude that this poster uses propaganda techniques like name calling to provoke the audience to take action in order “destroy this mad brute.”
