Glittering Generality
By: Andrew Kim
A glittering generality is a vague word or phrase used to evoke positive feelings rather than to convey information. The poster on the left clearly shows the technique behind it. The poster shows the countries of the Allied Powers, including the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, and many more. “United we are strong… United we will win.” This phrase persuades the other countries to join the Allied Powers so that the war can end. Although in practice it says nothing in particular, it uses value words such as “united,” “strong” and “win” to persuade the people to join the Allied Powers. People wanting to end this war would only be focused on those words not the other aspects of the poster, which makes glittering generality a great technique. Another technique, bandwagon is also being used in this poster as the creator of this poster added a lot of countries included in the Allied Powers making the others feel left-out affecting their emotions. With a balanced mix of both glittering generality and bandwagon, the poster successfully used the propaganda technique in order to convince the people to join the group.
