Emotional Appeal
By: Andrew Kim
This poster perfectly represents the propaganda idea of emotional appeal. During the First World War, the United Sates wasn't willing to participate in the war, although the war could have ended very quickly with the help of the United States. The United Kingdom, one of the main countries involved in this war made this poster to call out the United States to take action. The women in the poster, dressed in the American Flag symbolizes America asleep. People eagerly wishing the war to end were convinced by this poster as it affected their personal emotions. This is because this poster simply showed that with the support of the United States, all the violence could possibly stop. "Civilization calls every man, women and child" are also very strong words from the poster with a significant meaning telling how many people from the United Kingdom also want to end this long-lasting war. As of what is shown, it seems like this poster was specifically targeted to people already affected by the war to make them feel angry yet very sad, persuading them to convince the United States to join the war and bring the war to the end. In conclusion, with the balanced mix of words and the image, it shows how emotional appeal can prevail someone to do something.
